「"聴こえ"に関わらず共に笑いあえる社会を目指す。」
We aim to achieve a world where everyone smiles together regardless of their hearing-level.

What is DEAF SHIRU?

DEAF SHIRU is an organization that promotes understanding of hearing loss in Japan and Nepal.

Shuhei Kumagai, who is hard of hearing, met deaf people for the first time in Nepal when he was a university student and felt so welcomed in the deaf communities. As a result, he decided to found DEAF SHIRU after he realized “I want to create a society where people can laugh together regardless of their hearing levels.”

What we do

Why We Founded?

  • 6% of the population are inborn deaf, late-deafened, or hard of hearing.
  • There is no opportunity to “know and learn” deafness, and “communicate” with people with it.
  • “Disability” is something that is ridiculed.
  • The importance of revealing my hearing challenges.
  • Smoother communication.
  • A world where everyone smiles together regardless of hearing.
  • The role of DEAF SHIRU.

I have more reasons, experiences, and feelings for DEAF SHIRU, which I couldn’t mention just here.

I first encountered sign language at university and joined a sign language circle. I met many people with hearing loss and DEAF SHIRU throughout the sign language club. Currently, I am in charge of illustrations for DEAF SHIRU’s picture book project.

I am a high school English teacher. I like to play sports and am a soft tennis advisor. I took a leave of absence during my senior year of college to study abroad at a language school in Vancouver, Canada. There, I studied English pronunciation and articulation intensively. After returning to Japan, I obtained the first grade in EIKEN (English Proficiency Test). I am addicted to reading books on English education and practicing them in my classes. My dream is to become a teacher who can lead English education in Iwate Prefecture.
